Martin scores ASCAP hat trick; Waits feted

Swedish songwriter-producer Max Martin picked up the songwriter of the year honor for the third consecutive year at ASCAP's 18th annual Pop Music Awards on Tuesday night. Martin shared the top prize with Andreas Carlsson. Each wrote or co-wrote four prize-winning songs.
Other winners included Andreas Carlsson, Diane Warren, Desmond Child, Brian McKnight, Savage Garden, Filter, Timbaland, Lenny Kravitz, Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon, T-Boz of TLC and John Rzeznik of Goo Goo Dolls.
ASCAP's Pop Awards were presented to more than 600 songwriters or publishers who had the most-performed songs during the 2000 survey year. The ceremony, which honored songwriters and publishers, was held at the Beverly Hilton and hosted by Marilyn Bergman, Academy Award-winning songwriter and ASCAP president and chairman.
Martin won for writing Backstreet Boys' hits "I Want It That Way" and "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely," 'IM Sync's "It's Gonna Be Me" and Celine Dion's "That's the Way It Is," while Carlsson was honored for 'N Sync's "Bye Bye Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me" as well as "I Want It That Way" and "That's the Way It Is."
Tom Waits received the ASCAP Founders Award. The legendary singer-songwriter was hailed for being an "extraordinary musical storyteller." Beginning his musical career in 1973, Waits' style has spanned from country, blues and jazz to rock and avant-garde. His best-known songs include "Jersey Girl," "Downtown Train" and "Innocent When You Dream."
"I Knew I Loved You," co-written by Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones of Savage Garden, took home the song of the year nod.
EMI Music Publishing nabbed the publisher of the year award for 15 winning songs. EMI received the same honor last year for 14 songs.
Indie rock trio Modest Mouse picked up the college radio award, which honors the artist whose collective body of work over the year garnered the most performances on college radio.
